When a film is "R" rated, from which age you're allowed to watch it ?

It depends on the film. For some, you have to be 15 and some 17 or 18, I think. Let Me In is a 15, I'm pretty sure.
And the r-rated part isn't an automatic 'no' with my family. They've always said it depends why it's rated r. My mom's familiar with the original Carrie, so she's not too sure.

Ah I see in USA it's not so strict like in Germany. Here it doesn't depent on the film, it doesn't care. Either it's from 12 or it's from 16 - there's nothing between them.
But with some open-minded parents you will have a chance to see all movies although if you're formally to young for.

Just to clarify about the rating system in the USA. The rating that the MPAA gives to movies is only a suggestion and by no means a law. It's the same with video game ratings. Basically it's meant to suggest what is appropriate for children, but by no means is it a crime or anything to see an R rated movie or even NC-17.

Basically the suggestion is that R rated movies are only suitable for kids 17 or older on their own, or anyone under 17 but when they are accompanied by parents (so theoretically the parent can be like, "Don't try and take on NYC crime with a superhero suit like Hit-girl, child" during the movie or after). Anyway most movie theaters enforce that voluntarily the same way video games rated M aren't sold to minors alone, But yeah it's really a guide for parents and a very flawed and outdated one so don't rely on it. I mean there are so many PG-13 movies that should be R and so many R rated movies that should be PG-13. Then PG to PG-13 is worst LoL.

Thank you for the explanation, SniperJF. I see there's some difference between both systems. In Germany it's something which is make by the legislator. So it's a little bit like a law but if you visit a movie with your parents no one cares.

If you would go alone in a movie for which you're underaged you can pull out by the police (but it's very rare). But you don't get a punishment they just bring you to your parents at home (and then you can get trouble with your parents. )

But it's a big exception that the police would control cinema visitors. In most cases the seller of the theater takes a look and if it seems to him that you're to young and you can't proof your age it could happens that he doesn't sell you a ticket.

yeah I've heard some video games are even banned in Germany. It's a little too strict in my point of view but whatever works for them

Here in USA it has been tried to be taken to court, but always fails due to violating 1st ammendment's freedom of expression. So it's merely suggestions. It would be way too hard to enforce especially with online tickets these days.

Until a few years ago here in Brazil if a movie was R-rated you could go watch it even if you were 10 years old. Now things are getting more strict, but only in a few movie theaters. No one gives a sh*t, they just want your money, so it's everything ok since you are paying for it. It's just too perfect when you're underage and wants to watch something like a Scorsese film.

I really think is ridiculous how some countries like USA can be so paranoid about these things.

Well until recently I thought so too, and while If I ever have kids I won't limit them and will let them see any movie they want, I do want to keep an eye to make sure they don't see crazy things and want to imitate them. Recently I saw a movie called AVALON. Horrible movie, but it did taught a lesson among it's terrible plot. That these kids in like the 50s were watching a black and white show called cliffhanger where there was a trail of gunpowder that was going to lead to a bomb and the hero had to stop it. So the kids in the movie did the same thing with a model airplane and alcohol and nearly burned down their house and then later on burned down a factory or might as well have. Then they learned the lesson, so yeah some kids are too young to not understand that this may be wrong, these were like 7 year old kids in the movie, and while I'm sure a teen should understand this , I can see the fear of not controlling what stuff a 5 year old sees.

Anyway that's that. Back to Carrie. I do not like horror films, but I will still see this, hopefully it won't traumatize me
But it should be cool because I haven't seen the original Carrie

Awesome. He was really good in Chronicle (blast of a movie if you dig tragic stories), even if the guy who played 'Andrew' had more impact.
