Check out my interview with Chloe today about her new film Kick-Ass, her thoughts on the vampire phenomenon in today’s culture, projects and roles she’s interested in pursuing, her plans for her upcoming birthday, and Crochet for Haiti.
What drew you to the role of Hit-Girl?
I wanted to do an action film so badly. That is odd because they never write great action for kids. When the script came in I was so excited because Hit-Girl is a great character. She is crazy athletic and totally an amazing martial artist and marksman. One thing that made me like the character even more is that she is written with such heart. I got to do both action and drama in the same character and that is an actor’s dream.
Kick-Ass has a lot more action than your previous films. What was your favorite aspect of filming an action movie?
It is really tough to choose what was my favorite. I loved learning the martial arts moves. The weapons training that I did at a training center named 8711 was truly amazing! I did gymnastics and poise training also. I spent about a month with a couple of people at the Toronto Circus school and that was fun and challenging. Learning to actually flip a butterfly knife was fun and challenging too. I actually learned to flip two ballisongs at the same time, one in each hand.
Chloe is listed in Entertainment Weekly’s “New Stars for the New Year” in their January 8th issue. Here’s what they have to say about her:
Horror fans will remember Chloe Moretz from 2005′s Amityville Horror remake, but she also has indie cred from her turn as the knowing little sis in (500) Days of Summer. Come April, she’ll costar in the film adaptation of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, but it’s really her role as foulmouthed mini-assassin Hit-Girl in the superhero flick Kick-Ass (also out in April) that has tongues wagging. Just a clip sent crowds at Comic-Con into a frenzy last year: ”I have this video on my phone from when I was walking on stage, and the crowd goes ‘Ahhhh!’ It’s the best video ever,” the 12-year-old laughs.
Check out scans in the gallery, along with a new (500) Days of Summer still.
A new photo of Chloe on the set of Diary of a Wimpy Kid was posted a few days ago, and is in the gallery. Thanks to Dani for the heads up!
Variety has a new article about Chloe and the influence her brother, Trevor, had on her entrance into the acting world:
Chloe Grace Moretz wasn’t the first in her family to pursue acting. In fact, it wasn’t long after helping her older brother Trevor learn his lines for roles at New York’s Professional Performing Arts School that Moretz started pestering her parents about letting her do it, too. Her mother finally relented, and by the age of 7, Moretz had landed her big break, appearing in two episodes of 2004 TV series “The Guardian.” …Read more
You can also read an early screening review for Kick-Ass by Den of Geek, who praises Chloe on her performance as Hit-Girl:
I’d already heard that Chloe Moretz is a revelation as Hit-Girl/Mindy Macready, but I had no idea exactly how fantastic her performance would be. She plays the young daughter with the same adeptness that she portrays the superhero assassin and, my god, is ‘assassin’ the word. The problem is she’s 12. Just her age raises an issue, but her performance is a work of perfection, never feeling mawkish or twee, and will call upon a thousand comparisons (and rightly so) to Natalie Portman in Leon. There’s still going to be quite a debate arising from her performance, though. …Read more
